Rapid Weight Loss
When you think rapid weight loss, what do you envision? Some people think of losing 10 or more pounds in a few days or weeks. Words that are often heard along with the term rapid weight loss can include crash diets, pills and little to no work. These are just some ways that companies attempt to gain customers. The dieting industry makes roughly $40 Billion dollars a year by offering weight loss plans, but often times these don’t work.
Several methods of rapid weight loss can include starvation diets, pills and supplements, very low calorie diets, and magic. First of all, magic never really works. Next, starvation diets can be very dangerous. This is literally what it sounds like, where people starve themselves for several days at a time. A lot of times the first few pounds you lose are comprised of water. This can be dangerous for you, because you can easily become malnourished or dehydrated. This is a type of diet that is never recommended.
Pills and supplements are meant to increase your metabolism, or clean out your system. Often times the fastest ways to raise your metabolism is to change how much you eat and how often, and increasing your muscle mass. So wouldn't it be better to eat smaller meals more often, rather than getting the shivers due to an increase in caffeine?
And finally, very low calorie diets, or VLCD for short. VLCD’s are often used in studies about dieting. VLCD’s can be very effective, but there are some drawbacks to them. First of all they are doctor supervised. It’s not that doctors are bad, but the extra attention you will need can cost thousands of dollars. The doctor will work with a person planning out their meals, making sure that the meals are nutritionally balanced while being low in calories. Unfortunately the doctors can only give you the tools, but it takes determination to lose the weight. Often time’s people on VLCD can lose 15% to 25% of their body weight. But often times only about 25 to 50 percent of people can follow these diets through.
So what are some other options? Well, you could always go to a gym, watch what you eat and do some cardio. This way might take a little longer, but it can be much healthier, with less risks of rebounding back to the weight you use to be at. Now it may seem tough at first, but if you come to a gym with personal trainers, they can guide you along your weight loss path. Many people are uncertain about how many calories to consume, worried that they’ll work on the machine wrong, worried that the gym is crowded and unclean, or even worried that they’ll get judged by the other people there. So a better idea would be to find a smaller, less known gym with personal trainers.
